~ Heat ~

No, I'm not talking about the heat outdoors. Today, I want to talk about how the heat of the oven is measured. Oven heat is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units). One BTU is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit. This energy is about equal to that given off by a wooden match when completely burned. If the burner on a commercial gas range is rated at 15,000 BTUs then the energy it produces in one hour is about the equivalent of burning 15,000 matches. BTUs are associated only with the Fahrenheit scale. More tomorrow ... ~ Chef Wilkinson ~
